Carpmaels & Ransford has been at the vanguard of intellectual property for
over 200 years.
History From our modern headquarters in London, working with some of the most technologically advanced companies in the world, our history can seem remote. However, we believe that leadership qualities, so central to our past, are just as important to The origins of Carpmaels & Ransford date back to an enterprising spirit named James Poole, who not only founded the firm that became Carpmaels & Ransford, but was an early pioneer of the patent attorney profession. In 1776 he was appointed Clerk of Inventions in the Patent Office of the Attorney General in London. Here he revolutionised the convoluted processes of the time by offering to represent the inventor, saving him a myriad of frustrating procedures. Poole built up a substantial practice that was passed to William Carpmael, an engineer, in 1848. Four years later it was Carpmael who helped create the new Patents Act, the basis of the system with which we are now familiar. MoreThe firm’s early clients included Giuseppe Marconi and Bayer, forerunners of the global clients that the firm represents today. Meanwhile, our trade mark practice developed in its own right and clients included many household names. Partners at Carpmaels & Ransford have held the Presidency of The UK Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys seven times, and in three of the four terms in which the Presidency of the epi, the Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office, has been held by a UK representative, it has been a Carpmaels & Ransford partner at the helm. All proof that leadership remains at the heart of our firm today. |
