James’s practice is principally in the field of medicinal chemistry, especially small molecule therapeutics, drug delivery and formulation, dosage regimes and diagnostics. He was noted as “excellent” in the Legal 500 UK 2009.
James represents some of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies including Johnson & Johnson, Novartis and Roche in both contentious and non-contentious proceedings before the European Patent Office. A significant component of James’s current work includes defending Novartis’ patents for Lescol XL®, Glivec®, Exforge® and Exforge HCT® against multi-party oppositions in the European Patent Office. Antisense technology also features heavily in James’ work, carrying out prosecution, opposition and opinion work for the world’s leading antisense company, Isis Pharmaceuticals.
Consequently, he has significant experience conducting European oppositions alongside and in support of national litigation, which is typically pan-European. James enjoys drafting pharmaceutical patent applications and is also engaged in the direction and management of global patent portfolios.
MoreJames graduated with a first class degree in chemistry from Oxford University before embarking on his career as a patent attorney, winning a Gibbs prize and, for his final-year dissertation work, the university research prize.
James enjoys sailing, skiing, cycling, rearing ducks and restoring a battered Victorian farmhouse.
