Rachel Bullett

Rachel joined the firm in 1999 after graduating from the University of Nottingham with a first class degree in Biochemistry & Genetics. She qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2003. She deals almost exclusively with biotechnological subject-matter, with areas of particular expertise including antibodies, stem cells, transgenics and bio-molecule purification processes.
Rachel has been involved in developing IP filing strategies for a number of UK start-up companies, including providing advice on appropriate ways to protect foundation IP and performing freedom-to-operate analyses. As a result, she has considerable experience in the drafting of patent applications in the biotech area and in the prosecution of these applications both in Europe and in non-European countries, particularly in the US, Japan and China.
Rachel also has extensive experience of both pre-grant (examination) and post-grant (opposition and appeal) proceedings before the EPO, including representing clients at ex parte and inter partes oral hearings. In particular, she has provided strategic advice in relation to the prosecution and subsequent defence of a large portfolio of applications protecting core technology for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
MoreShe has been involved in numerous multi-party oppositions, both representing patentee and opponent. One high profile series of cases in which she has acted as opponent is the oppositions and appeals to PDL’s humanised antibody patents. She has also taken part in oppositions in fields including vaccines, antibody technology, stem cells, transgenic animals, transgenic plants, and telomerase-based therapeutics.
