Daniel Wise
Senior Associate
MA (Cantab), MSci (Natural Sciences), Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney.
Daniel has first class MA and MSci degrees in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University. During his studies, Daniel specialised in biochemistry, organic chemistry and molecular biology, and carried out research into the mechanisms of platelet activation and the regulation of cytokine levels in human blood. He also spent a summer at Yale University investigating the genetics of protein trafficking in yeast.
Daniel joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2002 and qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and a European Patent Attorney in 2006. During his qualification, Daniel obtained a distinction in the 2003 Certificate in Intellectual Property Law course at Queen Mary College, University of London. He was also awarded the Michael Jones prize from the Chartered Institute for his performance in the UK patent prosecution examination. His legal paper answers were selected by the European qualifying exam Examination Board for publication in its annual compendium of model answers.
Since qualification, Daniel has handled a wide range of biotechnological and chemical subject-matter. He has particular expertise in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications concerning vaccine technology, monoclonal antibody therapeutics, medicinal chemistry (particularly small molecule pharmaceuticals), peptide chemistry, recombinant gene expression, gene cloning, drug delivery and assay technologies. He has extensive experience of examination and opposition proceedings before the European Patent Office, both at first instance and appeal level. Daniel particularly enjoys European Patent Office hearings and has represented clients in several multiparty disputes.
MoreHis clients are based throughout the world, and Daniel regularly attends in-house meetings to discuss the management of patent portfolios and to provide strategic advice. Over recent years, Daniel has developed specialist knowledge in the niche area of supplementary protection certificates (SPCs). He has coordinated the prosecution of several high profile SPC portfolios across the EU and advised on the infringement and validity of third party SPCs. Beyond Europe, Daniel has experience in the prosecution of global portfolios of patent applications, including applications in Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Russia and the United States.
Daniel is interested in film and travel, particularly to the Far East. He also enjoys skiing, hiking and running, and sings baritone in a choir.
