Gillian Phillips
Senior Associate
MA (Cantab), MSci (Natural Sciences), Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney.
Gillian entered the profession in 2002 and joined the firm in 2006. She has first class M.A. (Hons) and M.Sci degrees in Natural Sciences from St. John's College, University of Cambridge, where she specialised in inorganic chemistry. As part of her degree, she carried out a research project with the aim of synthesising new ruthenium-based sandwich compounds, potentially useful in catalysis. She was awarded the Bill Caro prize for obtaining the top mark in the postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary, University of London, in 2004 and qualified as a Chartered patent attorney and European patent attorney in 2006.
Gillian handles mainly chemical subject-matter and has particular experience in the fields of polymer chemistry, organometallic chemistry and small molecule pharmaceuticals. She has experience working for a variety of clients including both small start-up companies and leading multi-national pharmaceutical companies including Johnson & Johnson and Novartis.
Gillian’s practice is primarily concerned with the drafting and prosecution of patent applications, both in Europe and elsewhere, and in the handling of post-grant opposition proceedings before the European Patent Office, including representing clients in both ex-partes and inter-partes hearings. Gillian also has experience in managing global patent portfolios and advising clients on matters relating to infringement and enforcement of patents.
MoreGillian enjoys mountain-walking, running and cycling and helps to run a local Duke of Edinburgh's award group. She is currently training for her Mountain Leader qualification and has recently started to compete in triathlons.
