Edward Oates

Ed handles a wide range of subject-matter, predominantly in the life sciences field. He has particular expertise in drafting and prosecuting patent applications relating to medicinal chemistry, especially small molecule pharmaceuticals, second generation pharmaceutical products, imaging tools, diagnostic techniques and drug delivery. Ed also regularly deals with inventions in the fields of industrial chemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, polymer chemistry and materials science.
Ed represents clients in both pre-grant (examination) and post-grant (opposition and appeal) hearings before the European Patent Office, in both defence and attack. He has also acted before the UK Intellectual Property Office, the UK High Court and the UK Court of Appeal, and has managed litigation in a number of other jurisdictions.
One of Ed’s areas of particular interest is patent lifecycle management, and he advises clients on supplementary protection certificates (SPCs), paediatric extensions and regulatory exclusivity. He has an extremely detailed knowledge of SPC law, and has coordinated several complex pan-European SPC portfolios.
MorePrior to joining Carpmaels in 2003, Ed studied Chemistry at Oxford University where he was awarded a scholarship and a number of prizes for his academic performance, graduating with a first class degree. He spent a research year focusing on the organic synthesis of transition metal coordinated macrocycles that are capable of sensing ionic species. Ed then gained a distinction in the Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary College, University of London, and went on to achieve the second highest marks in the year in his UK patent attorney final examinations.
Ed enjoys theatre, opera and live comedy. He also loves playing and watching sport, particularly football, and despite living within earshot of the Arsenal stadium, has a season ticket at Tottenham Hotspur.
