Stuart Forrest

M.Chem. (Oxon), Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney

Stuart studied Chemistry at Oxford University, graduating in 2003 with a first class degree. During his studies, he carried out research that fell under the broad heading of carbohydrate chemistry that involved investigating approaches to the synthesis of a variety of nucleoside antibiotics, such as the Miharamycins, in collaboration with the Universidade de Lisboa.

Stuart joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2004 and is a UK Charted Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney. He deals with a wide range of chemical subject-matter, with a particular focus on applications relating to pharmaceutical chemistry. He has experience of drafting and prosecuting applications before the European Patent Office, and representing clients at post grant (opposition and appeal) proceedings before the European Patent Office. Stuart also has experience of managing global portfolios of patent applications, both pre grant (examination) and post grant (opposition) proceedings, and applying for patent term extensions in countries outside Europe, such as the United States and Australia.

In the wider professional context, Stuart is a member of CIPA’s Patents Committee and is a CIPA delegate to the Patent Practice Working Group which meets regularly with the UK IPO to discuss practice issues. He has also tutored and lectured the Informals (the student body of CIPA) on several occasions, preparing candidates for their UK examinations and the EQE.

Stuart enjoys playing golf, running and developing his foreign language skills (he is currently learning German).
