Richard has more than 20 years' experience (he joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 1985) and is one of the most successful patent attorneys in Europe having drafted, filed and prosecuted a huge number of applications. With many long standing clients, including global companies such as Raytheon Company (defence), Nippon Seiki Co., Ltd (automotive electro-mechanical), Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd (DVD/CD) and The DIRECTV Group (satellite/signal processing), Richard also brings an international reputation. His philosophy is that a client’s best interests are always paramount, and that good practical advice is what is needed whether it relates to an infringement/enforcement problem or to a foreign filing strategy.

Richard handles a broad spectrum of subject-matter in the electrical, electronic and light engineering fields, including optics, software patents and internet-related issues. He has considerable experience of handling European Patent Office oppositions and appeal proceedings, including hearings. He has also been involved in U.K. High Court and Patents County Court proceedings with solicitors and barristers.

Richard also specialises in designs and design copyright matters and understands the value of these often undervalued rights having had considerable successful experience in enforcing registered and unregistered design rights.
