Jonathan Stafford
Trainee

MChem (Hon.), PhD (Chemistry)

Jonathan joined the firm as a trainee in 2007 and is now a part-qualified UK Patent Attorney.

Jonathan graduated with 1st class honours from UMIST (now part of the University of Manchester) where he received the Fluorochem Prize for outstanding academic and sporting achievement in his final exams. His final-year research project focussed on the investigation of mechanistic aspects of the Pictet-Spengler reaction. Jonathan then went on to complete a Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Prof. Ian Paterson FRS where he worked on the stereochemical determination and stereoselective total synthesis of biologically active marine macrolides. Jonathan’s research led to publication in high-impact journals such as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Angewandte Chemie.

On completing his Ph.D., Jonathan was recruited into the Process R&D laboratories at AstraZeneca, Macclesfield, where he worked on high-profile projects at various stages of process development before moving on to Carpmaels & Ransford.

Jonathan is a keen sportsman and has travelled around most of Europe representing both England and Great Britain National Water Polo teams.
