Cameron Marshall
Partner
B.A. (Hons.) (Biochemistry), M.Biochem., Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney.
Cameron works almost exclusively in the biotechnology field. He has received high praise from the independent guides to the legal profession. Chambers & Partners stated: "The hugely respected Cameron Marshall is considered ‘one of the most superior attorneys ever seen’ by market observers, who deem his experience in the biotech field unsurpassed." In the latest MIP annual survey, an industry peer described Cameron as "fabulous, he knows his area well and is very hard working." He also received client praise for his commercial approach: "He has a unique ability for an external counsel to appreciate the business and strategic effects of his work. He really understands the business drivers of his work."
Cameron has over 10 years of experience of inter partes proceedings at the European Patent Office, both defending and attacking, and he is one of only a handful of attorneys to have represented a patentee in an EPO opposition involving more than 15 opponents. Although most of his work has been in the biotechnology field (including defence of the “Southern” array patents held by Oxford Gene Technology) his expertise in EPO oppositions means that he has also been engaged to defend patents involving formulations, salts and dosing regimes for blockbuster pharmaceuticals.
Outside the UK and the EPO Cameron has worked on re-examinations, interferences and arbitrations in the USA, and has co-ordinated parallel invalidity proceedings in more than a dozen jurisdictions across six continents.
MoreMost of Cameron’s time is spent acting for companies in the Novartis group, and in particular for its Vaccines & Diagnostics division (formerly Chiron). As well as advising on patent matters, he was a tutor for several years on the JDD residential course to prepare candidates for the EQE opposition paper. He is also co-opted as an adviser to IP monitoring group of the UK Government’s Human Genetics Commission.
Cameron graduated from Oxford University where his work on the folding thermodynamics of fibronectin type III modules was awarded the university research prize and contributed to his first class degree.
Cameron is an avid follower of horse racing, particularly over fences, and is a member at Sandown Park.
