Chris Tunstall
Partner
B.A. (Hons.) (Physics), Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney, Patent Attorney Litigator.
Chris handles a diverse portfolio of technologies in the physical sciences. Having been cited in both the Legal 500 and the Guide to the World’s Leading Experts in Patent Law, Chris is frequently engaged by international clients seeking doggedness, experience and, above all, results, in strategic patent prosecution and opposition and appeal proceedings in the European Patent Office.
Chris is lead counsel for Micron Technology, Inc., one of the world's leading providers of advanced semiconductor solutions, in its successful bid to revoke or declare not infringed a series of European patents held by Rambus, Inc., that were intended to cover standards-compliant SDRAM and DDR-SDRAM, the market in which is worth billions. These paradigm cases have provided valuable insights into a series of complex legal issues concerning the extent to which applicants for European patents can redefine the inventions for which they are seeking protection, and have been used as a teaching resource by the European Patent Office itself.
Chris advised from a European perspective on, and helped frame the terms of, the Patent Reform Bill that was presented to the US Congress in June 2005. Chris handles the interests of a number of international players including medical device businesses, OEMs in the automotive sector and IT and telecommunications service providers.
MoreChris is a qualified litigator and has litigated patents in all English courts, including the House of Lords, and in France, Germany and Italy. He is a scholar of St. Peter’s College, Oxford University, from which he graduated with a first class degree in physics, and during his professional career has spent time serving on the Executive Committee of a major international law firm.
Chris is a member of British Cycling and regularly participates in triathlons and long-distance cyclosportives, often in the company of his wife Nicola and three children, Katy, James and Jonathan.
