Emily Nikolic

Emily’s work covers a broad range of life sciences inventions including therapeutic antibodies, vaccines and other immunotherapies, nucleic acid amplification, gene expression and cloning technologies, gene therapy vectors, stem cells and reproductive technologies. She advises her clients on all stages of patent prosecution, with a focus on EPO opposition and appeal proceedings, in addition to providing support in parallel litigation in several jurisdictions. Emily provides strategic advice in pressure-testing patent portfolios, freedom to operate and due diligence analyses. She also assists clients in maximising patent term, taking into account the interplay between supplementary protection certificates and regulatory protection to realise clients’ commercial goals.

Emily joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2011 and qualified both as a European Patent Attorney and a UK Patent Attorney in 2015.  As part of her qualification, she was awarded the Bill Caro Prize at Queen Mary University of London for the highest mark in the Certificate in Intellectual Property Law.

Prior to this, Emily graduated from the University of Cambridge with a first class degree in Natural Sciences, specialising in Pathology. She received the Laurie Hart Memorial Prize for academic excellence from Girton College in her final year, in addition to annual college prizes and scholarships.

Emily’s post-graduate research was conducted in Cambridge as part of the highly competitive Wellcome Trust PhD programme in Infection and Immunity. She conducted projects in parasitology, molecular virology and biochemistry, followed by doctoral research into the mechanism of ribosomal frameshifting, a strategy used by certain viruses to generate specific shifts into alternative open reading frames during protein synthesis. This included a study of the effects of frameshifting on ribosome structure using cryo-electron microscopy, in collaboration with the University of Oxford.

Aside from work, Emily enjoys skiing, travelling abroad and learning languages, with a current focus on German. Bilingual in Italian, she is enjoying the challenge of raising trilingual children.
