Paul Kaufman

Senior Associate

Paul specialises in pharmaceutical subject-matter and handles patent applications at all stages of the product lifecycle, such as those relating to new chemical entities, crystal forms, synthetic processes, formulations and medical uses. He is currently involved in the prosecution of applications worldwide, and several EPO oppositions defending patents that protect blockbuster pharmaceuticals. Paul also has valuable experience planning and implementing complex pan-European SPC filing strategies and working closely with clients to determine the strength and commercial value of IP during due diligence.

Before joining the firm in 2012 as a trainee patent attorney, Paul graduated with a first class degree in chemistry from Merton College, University of Oxford, where he received the Gibbs Prize for coming joint first in his final exams. His final-year research project focused on the synthesis and fundamental properties of novel organometallic transition metal complexes, which culminated in a peer-reviewed journal article. As part of his training at Carpmaels & Ransford, Paul obtained the Certificate in IP Law from Queen Mary University of London, receiving the Bill Caro Prize for achieving the top mark in the final exams.

Outside of work Paul enjoys playing badminton with friends.
