Rachel has a diverse practice with work spanning Engineering, Tech, Chemistry and Materials sectors, including oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant manufacture, modified cellulose fibres for paper-making, electroplating processes, polymer banknote technology, PPE polymer gloves, microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation, animal nutrition, skin care and medical devices.  Rachel also has a keen interest in nutraceuticals and functional foods, particularly from a regulatory perspective.

In addition to her substantial experience prosecuting European patent applications, Rachel has also worked on many European oppositions and appeals across a variety of subject-matter. Rachel enjoys the challenge of working in diverse technical areas and has provided successful advocacy for her clients both in person at the EPO and in a number of video conference oral proceedings.

Alongside her European work, Rachel manages large global portfolios and has extensive prosecution experience outside Europe, including Japan, China, Brazil and the US.  During the course of her global portfolio management, Rachel has dealt with Chinese re-examination, the Brazilian patent office appeal procedure, a Japanese Patent Office revocation action and Japanese High Court proceedings.  Rachel also has experience of providing litigation support in a Section 72 UKIPO revocation action.

Rachel joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2005 and qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2009.  Rachel graduated with a first class degree from Edinburgh University, where she was awarded the MacFarlan Smith Prize for the highest overall Honours mark in Chemistry. Her Doctorate, also completed at Edinburgh University, focused on electrochemistry and materials science and the application of known theories in these areas to investigate the basic parameters of electrochemical machining, a technique used to shape difficult-to-machine alloys.

Out of work, Rachel devotes much of her time to her family.  She enjoys reading and long walks with her children and her dog.  She has a keen interest in military aircraft and has completed the RAF Elementary Flying Training Course.
