BA (Hons) (Biochemistry), MA, DPhil, Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney
Hugh Goodfellow leads the biotechnology team at Carpmaels & Ransford LLP. While training, Dr Goodfellow became involved at an early stage in a number of important multi-party European Patent Office (EPO) oppositions and appeals for sophisticated clients, and handling EPO oppositions and appeals occupies a significant proportion of his time today. He has been responsible for establishing the filing strategy and generating IP portfolios for a number of UK start-up companies, and has guided clients from early conception through financing rounds and subsequent public flotation.
Hugh’s particular areas of current focus include stem cells, transgenics, biofuels, complex immunology and nano-biotechnology. He has extensive experience of patent prosecution in countries outside Europe and has pan-European expertise in the filing and prosecution of supplementary protection certificates nationally, as well as experience before the Court of Justice of the European Union.
His direct clients range from biotech companies in the United Kingdom and continental Europe, universities and research organisations, through to large and long-established global companies. These experiences provide Hugh with the ability both to protect foundation intellectual property as broadly as possible and to forecast potential future problems, from the viewpoint of both IP generation and freedom to operate.
Hugh received his BA (Hons) in biochemistry and his MA and DPhil from Oxford University.
