The largest specialist Life Sciences IP group on one site in Europe

Our Life Sciences group is unparalleled in Europe. It is led by lawyers who have been at the forefront of their fields for decades and whose enviable pedigrees have been hard won through years of experience on the front line.

The group has 13 partners, including litigators, patent and trade mark attorneys and SPC specialists, and in support of them a further 11 senior associates and 28 associates and technical assistants, with a highly experienced retired partner as consultant. This makes Carpmaels & Ransford the largest specialist life sciences IP group on one site in Europe.

We cover all aspects of IP from invention mining, drafting and prosecution, through to enforcement and defence of intellectual property surrounding some of Europe’s most commercially valuable blockbuster products. Efficiency with an holistic, high quality approach to dispute management and resolution is our objective.

This presents an enticing offering and, year after year, we are deepening our relationships with existing clients and attracting new clients who are turning to us for advice and support.

Defence of patents covering the antibiotic Cubicin®

Our disputes team has supported clients in numerous matters, many of which cross European borders, and where parallel or related litigation is ongoing in courts across Europe or in the United States. One very significant instruction that has kept the team busy was for Cubist (subsequently acquired by Merck & Co., Inc.), defending multiple patents that covered the antibiotic Cubicin® in a revocation action filed in the UK Courts by Hospira, with parallel defence of some of the same patents before the EPO opposition divisions and appeal boards. As with all of our litigation matters, the combination of solicitors and technically excellent patent attorneys provides a very effective team for the client.

Team: Camilla Balleny, Ed Oates, Cameron Marshall, Sarah Johnson, Isobel Barry, Emma Demetriades, Mark Hopkin, Henry Evans and Matthew Georgiou
