Alex is a part of the Pharmaceutical, and the Chemistry and Materials teams. His work is focussed on the prosecution and defence of portfolios protecting small molecule pharmaceutical products, from NCE filings to medical uses, formulations and enantiomers. This work includes opposition proceedings and SPC prosecution. Alex also has experience in European patent prosecution across a range of technical fields from medical devices to enzyme catalysis, and has a particular interest in carbon recycling technologies.
Alex joined Carpmaels & Ransford having completed a Master’s degree at Lincoln College, Oxford. His fourth year research project focussed on the biocatalytic synthesis of lactones and other fragrance compounds. By using engineered P450 enzymes, he was able to selectively hydroxylate specific C-H bonds in a range of fatty acids to produce natural grade lactones at laboratory scale.
Outside of the office Alex enjoys rugby and running. He is also an avid traveller, with a bias for countries where he can improve his Arabic.
