Alexandra Pearson

Counsel

Alexandra is a Counsel in the Dispute Resolution team whose practice focuses on multi-jurisdictional patent litigation across all industry sectors, but particularly on the various aspects of the life sciences sector.

In the pharmaceutical space, Alexandra has experience acting in a number of disputes for large pharmaceutical clients (including MSD and BMS). She has acted in proceedings before the High Court, Court of Appeal, UK Supreme Court and also has first-hand experience of the EPO, Court of Justice of the European Union, and the Mannheim patent infringement courts.

Notably Alexandra represented Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) in its case against Sandoz and Teva concerning Eliquis®, the blockbuster BMS and Pfizer anticoagulant drug (apixaban), in a significant appeal exploring the boundaries of UK law on plausibility. Alexandra also represented Eli Lilly against Actavis in the UK Supreme Court with respect to its patent that claims the use of pemetrexed disodium. A case which had a significant impact on the law of patent infringement in the UK, in particular as to the doctrine of equivalents.

Alexandra also has experience on a range of complex patent portfolio, SPC and associated regulatory issues. She acted for MSD in the first UK case dealing with the interpretation of European legislation regarding the Specific Mechanism for parallel imports (ultimately resulting in a favourable ruling from the CJEU).

On the non-contentious side, Alexandra has previously assisted clients with the IP aspects of life sciences M&A transactions and licensing agreements.

Before joining Carpmaels & Ransford in 2025, Alexandra trained, qualified and practised at a leading international law firm based in London. Alexandra has an honours degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Durham (with a focus on Biochemistry and Biotechnology) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law from the University of Oxford.
