Andreas Theisen

Senior Associate

Andreas works in the firm’s Life Sciences group and specializes in biological therapeutics and diagnostics, and in particular therapeutic antibody, gene therapy, and cell therapy products. His practice focusses on supporting the launch of clients’ commercial products. By nature, the work is commercially sensitive and often contentious, and Andreas has considerable experience in handling innovator-on-innovator oppositions and appeals at the EPO both attacking and defending. Andreas recently worked on the successful EPO opposition defences of Stanford University’s ‘Quake’ patent estate covering commercial non-invasive pre-natal testing (NIPT) methods, which were also litigated in the UK High Court (Illumina, Inc v Premaitha Health Plc).

Andreas has a breadth of experience providing strategic advice on prosecution strategies, supplementary protection certificates (SPCs), freedom-to-operate and finance-related due diligence activities, as well as coordinating with litigators in cases with anticipated or pending parallel EPO and national court proceedings.

Contentious work aside, Andreas enjoys prosecuting commercially valuable portfolios before the EPO and in other major jurisdictions covering clinical candidates and platform technologies.

Andreas has over a decade of experience having started his career at another leading private practice firm in 2008; he joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2016.

Andreas’ PhD research focussed on elucidating the regulation of methane and multi-carbon metabolism in the facultative methane-oxidizing bacterium Methylocella silvestris BL2. His research resulted in his authoring several scientific publications and culminated in the sequencing of the M. silvestris genome by the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute.

Andreas delights in spending time with his young family and, more rarely these days, enjoys following Premier League and Bundesliga football or playing a round of golf followed by a Kölsch or two.
