Andreas works within the firm’s Life Sciences group with expertise in both the biotechnology and pharmaceutical fields. His practice focuses on contentious work including defending and attacking patents in EPO opposition and appeal proceedings. Andreas also advises on complex freedom-to-operate projects and other due diligence activities, and his experience includes providing counsel for a client’s NASDAQ IPO. Andreas enjoys prosecuting high value cases before the EPO, and he has significant experience in the prosecution of portfolios before the EPO and in other major jurisdictions covering clinical candidates and platform technologies. Andreas also advises clients in relation to supplementary protection certificates (SPCs) and provides related regulatory advice.
Andreas’ technical expertise underpins his work in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical fields, with particular emphasis on oligonucleotide, peptide and protein-based technologies including recombinant vaccines, therapeutic and diagnostic antibodies, antisense oligonucleotides, diagnostic assays, PCR and amplification reaction technology, recombinant gene expression and transgenic plant technology.
Andreas provides litigation support in cases with parallel EPO and national court proceedings and works closely with the firm’s dispute resolution team to provide advice and develop strategies strengthening the launch of commercial products.
Andreas joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2016, having worked in another private practice firm since 2008. Andreas’ PhD research focussed on elucidating the regulation of methane and multi-carbon metabolism in the facultative methane-oxidizing bacterium Methylocella silvestris BL2. His research resulted in his authoring several scientific publications and culminated in the sequencing of the M. silvestris genome by the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute.
