Claudia Earl

Associate

Claudia is an associate in the Chemistry team and specialises in pharmaceutical patents. Claudia particularly enjoys working on contentious matters, which recently included successfully defending European patents protecting the blockbuster drug Velcade® against 11 opponents in opposition and appeal proceedings at the European Patent Office, whilst simultaneously providing key support on corresponding multi-jurisdictional litigation. Her experience grew from working with the Dispute Resolution team in its defence of Revlimid® in the UK and other European courts, as well as her work on patents covering marketed products, such as Symkevi®, Invokana®, and Exforge®.

Claudia’s portfolio focuses on small molecules and antisense technology, for which she handles all aspects of European patent prosecution and post-grant opposition and appeal proceedings, as well as patent term extensions and orphan exclusivity. Claudia also coordinates global patent portfolios, providing insight on world-wide challenges and generating bespoke solutions to navigate local law. Her technical expertise spans a range of subject matter, including new chemical entities, formulations, processes, dosage regimens, and further medical uses.

Before joining Carpmaels in 2016, Claudia studied Chemistry at the University of Bristol and graduated with a first class Master’s degree. As part of her degree, Claudia spent a year working in the Flexible Discovery Unit at GSK, focusing on GSK’s highest priority lead optimisation programmes that were dedicated to delivering high quality candidate molecules. Her final year research project involved the development of novel palladium(II) catalysed C-H activation and substitution cascades to synthesise complex polyheterocycles.

Outside of the office, Claudia is an avid cook and all-round foodie. She loves travelling and getting into nature, especially if it involves hiking, skiing, or diving.
