Daniel Hurst
Associate

Daniel joined the Chemistry team at Carpmaels & Ransford in 2025, having previously started in the profession at another IP firm in 2021. Prior to that, Daniel graduated from the University of York with a first-class master’s degree in chemistry. During his undergraduate studies, he spent a year in industry working in the synthetic chemistry team for an international pharmaceutical company. Following this, Daniel spent two years as a postgraduate researcher at the University of Liverpool investigating the use of robotics in the field of organic chemistry before entering the world of IP.
For his final year research project during his master’s degree, Daniel investigated the use of late-stage functionalisation in the development of potential new drug compounds. In particular, his work focused on late-stage fluorination. Through the controlled introduction of a fluorine atom at specific locations on key compounds, new reactions could be unlocked to allow the synthesis of novel compounds.
Outside of work, Daniel enjoys tending to (and expanding) his indoor houseplant collection. He can also often be found trying to keep up with his friends on a run or trying out a new recipe in the kitchen.
