Gus Michael

Associate

Gus qualified as an Australian lawyer in 2018 and joined Carpmaels’ Dispute Resolution team in 2023. He specialises in patent disputes, particularly for clients in the pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors. Gus has experience working with global players in relation to infringement and validity risks surrounding their blockbuster products (both small molecules and biologics). He prides himself on working closely with clients to help tailor litigation strategies for maximal commercial potential and legal viability. Gus has also advised clients in relation to other IP rights, consumer law, franchising and contractual disputes (including via international arbitration).

Gus holds a Bachelor of Science (majoring in pharmacology) and a Juris Doctor, both from the University of Melbourne, Australia. Prior to joining Carpmaels, Gus worked at a top tier Australian firm for over 4 years. With his technical background Gus can quickly grasp the scientific issues in patent disputes, allowing him to understand client goals, expert evidence and prior art. Gus has used these skills to advise clients on the strength of an extension of patent term (Australian equivalent to the SPC regime) for a crystalline polymorph and developing expert evidence in relation to biologic manufacturing processes of cell culture & purification. Between September 2022 and May 2023, Gus was seconded to Uría Menéndez in Madrid, Spain, where he worked in the international arbitration team on cross-border commercial contract disputes.

Despite being a self-confessed ‘law nerd’, there is more to Gus than just patent litigation. He is something of a sports fanatic – he is willing to try his hand at just about anything that involves chasing a ball around a field – and is also a keen skier, amateur guitarist (and even more amateur karaoke singer), and enjoys sampling the wares of the ever-expanding range of craft breweries popping up around town.
