Harry Shaw

Harry joined Carpmaels & Ransford as a Knowledge Paralegal in July 2025. Within the Knowledge team he works with both solicitors and attorneys in order to aid the firm’s growing knowledge and research strategy as well as working closely with the disputes team on litigation. Harry studied at UCL, in his final year writing on AI and the lack of capability of AI output to gain copyright protection under UK or EU law before going onto study a Masters in IP law under Sir Robin Jacob. Throughout this he worked at a legal start-up surrounding young people’s tenancy rights,  as a research assistant at the University of Cambridge focusing on Human Rights and Access to Justice across Europe and at UCL’s Centre for Law, Economics and Society, aiding in merger reports for NGOs.

During his Masters, Harry was able to combine his love of tech and IP law, focusing on the interplay of AI and copyright law, writing on both how generative machines can impact the artistic market as well as most effective legal routes of protecting creatives at all levels within the industry at a UK and EU level. Throughout this research into creativity and AI, Harry learnt and researched neural network architecture and AI training, focusing on how both Large Language Models and Diffusion models learn from copyright works and how this changes weighting within the networks. His LLM  thesis on AI and Copyright law was awarded the IBIL IP Dissertation Award for the top-ranking research in IP.
