John’s practice encompasses a variety of chemical technologies. He has particular expertise in the fields of synthetic organic chemistry, commodity chemicals, electrochemistry, catalysis, polymer chemistry, oil and gas recovery and refining, chemical engineering, and green chemistry. In addition to the drafting and prosecution of UK and European patent applications, John has a substantial opposition portfolio and regularly represents clients before the Opposition Divisions and Boards of Appeal at the European Patent Office.
John joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2013, having qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2010. He graduated with a first class degree in chemistry from King’s College London, where he was awarded the Sambrooke Exhibition in Natural Sciences and the McGhie Prize for organic chemistry.
He went on to complete a DPhil in organic chemistry at Oxford University, where he conducted research into the partial reduction of heteroaromatic compounds and its application to the total synthesis of natural products. During his DPhil studies, he also spent a period conducting research in the drug discovery department of a major multinational pharmaceutical company.
John is an accomplished musician. He holds an ABRSM diploma in piano performance and regularly takes part in concerts and recitals.
