Jonny Bodey

As part of the Engineering and Technology group, Jonny’s work covers a wide range of technologies including aircraft, artificial intelligence, bicycle components, diagnostic testing apparatus, electric vehicles, and quantum technologies. He is particularly experienced in the medical technology sector, and has worked extensively on cardiac mapping devices and associated software, apparatus and control systems for performing phacoemulsification surgery, and electrosurgical treatment devices. His work in sector this focusses spans both hardware and software, including electronics, control systems and data processing.

Jonny enjoys digging into the technical details of complex, tricky cases and developing creative solutions to defend them. He has worked throughout the patent life cycle, including invention mining, patent drafting, and patent prosecution at the EPO and the UKIPO. He is also adept at dealing with contentious matters, having worked on several high-value patent oppositions at the EPO, as well as a design invalidity action at the EUIPO. He has experience of preparing infringement and validity opinions, conducting freedom-to-operate analysis, as well as co-ordinating prosecution of patent families across multiple jurisdictions. Jonny has also worked on a major due diligence project as part of a corporate acquisition.

Jonny holds a triple first class Master’s degree in Natural Sciences (Physics) and a PhD in Quantum Physics from Magdalene College, Cambridge. His doctoral project required the marriage of several skillsets including optics, cryogenics, high-frequency electronics, and advanced data manipulation. During his studies, he won a series of prizes for outstanding academic performance, and was elected to the Stothert Bye-Fellowship of Magdalene College in the third year of his PhD. His work has been published in several high-impact journals, including Science and Nature Physics, and he was fortunate to have the opportunity to give presentations at several conferences across Europe and North America.

Outside of the office, Jonny can most likely be found outdoors, either walking, running, or cycling. He is also an avid reader and a lapsed pianist.
