Jonny Bodey

Technical Assistant

Jonny joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2021 as a Trainee Patent Attorney, working within the Engineering and Tech teams. He studied Natural Sciences, specialising in Physics, at Magdalene College, Cambridge, graduating with a first class Master’s degree and winning a series of prizes for outstanding academic performance. He continued at the same institution for his PhD, where he worked in the Atomic, Mesoscopic and Optical Physics division of the Cavendish Laboratory. In the third year of his PhD, he was elected to a Bye-Fellowship of Magdalene College.

During his PhD, Jonny studied the physics of spins trapped in semiconductors. In particular, he used optical photons to manipulate single spins trapped within semiconductor nanostructures known as quantum dots, in order to study their quantum dynamics. This required the marriage of several skillsets including optics, cryogenics, high-frequency electronics, and advanced data manipulation. His work has been published in several high-impact journals, including Science and Nature Physics. During his time as a graduate student, he was also involved in undergraduate teaching and admissions interviews.

Outside of the office, Jonny can most likely be found outdoors, either walking, running, or cycling. He is also an avid reader and a lapsed pianist.
