Joshua Field

Technical Assistant

Josh joined Carpmaels & Ransford in September 2025 as a trainee patent attorney, working in the Chemistry Team. He graduated with a first-class degree in Natural Sciences, specialising in chemistry, from the University of Cambridge. He then completed a DPhil in supramolecular organic chemistry at the University of Oxford, under the supervision of Prof. Harry Anderson.

During his DPhil, Josh synthesised a range of pi-conjugated organic molecules to probe the size limits of aromaticity, as well as to gain an understanding of how to control charge transport through a single molecule for use in molecular electronics. As part of his Doctoral Training Centre program, he also undertook a four-month project in the lab of Prof. Iain McCulloch, synthesising new monomers for use in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs).

Between finishing his PhD and joining Carpmaels, Josh worked for two different lab-based startup companies. The first involved developing methods to make fully bio-based alternatives to conventional polyurethane plastics, and in the second company he investigated novel linkers for antibody drug conjugates (ADCs) for use in improved targeted cancer therapies.

Outside of work, Josh enjoys going bouldering, reading a range of Sci-Fi novels, listening to all kinds of rock music, and is always keen to (badly) play some darts.
