Kevin Cordina

Partner

Kevin is a patent attorney and partner in the Engineering & Technology group delivering commercially focused advice to help clients build and exploit international patent portfolios. Kevin works across a wide range of technologies, but has particular knowledge and experience in the electronics, cellular telecommunications, and medical device sectors. As well as drafting, prosecuting, and managing international patent application portfolios, Kevin is an expert in contentious matters, particularly acting in opposition proceedings at the European Patent Office where he has an enviable success rate. Kevin works with companies from small startups to some of the world’s largest companies, providing pragmatic advice tailored to their business goals. As well as disputes concerning infringement and validity, Kevin also has experience of a number of ownership disputes, helping clients retain or gain ownership of valuable patent assets.

Kevin started his career as a research engineer at a multinational telecommunications company developing optical amplifiers for high-capacity, long-haul optical networks. Kevin gained experience of the patent system as inventor on a number of patent applications before transferring to the company’s in-house patent team. Kevin completed his training at a patent attorney firm before spending over 20 years in the IP group of two UK based international law firms.

In the medical devices field, Kevin has developed a reputation for building and defending commercially valuable patent portfolios. In the wound care space he was part of the team which obtained the last UK interim injunction for a non-pharmaceutical product (Kinetic Concepts/Wake Forest v Smith & Nephew) and went on to play a key role in an international enforcement campaign. He has since led well over 100 offensive and defensive oppositions to defend his client’s portfolios and maintain their freedom to operate.

In the cellular telecommunications sector, Kevin has assisted a number of clients to secure portfolios of standards-essential patents, and has represented clients in a number of international patent litigation battles (e.g. Philips v Xiaomi, Vringo v ZTE).

Kevin regularly works in the consumer electronics sector, supporting companies working in areas including remote controls, displays, computer software, and mobile devices.

Kevin regularly works with small companies, helping them balance the competing challenges of costs and securing early protection. He has particular experience helping companies resolve ownership disputes to ensure valuable IP protection is not lost.

'Kevin Cordina is a calm and experienced professional who covers all aspects of IP.'
