Richard is the firm’s Managing Partner and has over 30 years’ experience in the patent profession. He is one of the most successful patent attorneys in Europe having drafted, filed and prosecuted a huge number of applications. His philosophy is that a client’s best interests are always paramount, and that good practical advice is what is needed, whether it relates to a drafting decision, an infringement/enforcement problem or a foreign filing strategy.
Richard’s Chemical Physics degree provides a perfect grounding for a patent attorney. His work covers a very broad spectrum of subject matter, from ‘simple engineering’, such as window hinges and door handles, through material science related projects (carbon flywheels) to complex IT related aspects of network systems and telecommunications. With many long standing clients including global players and local companies, Richard is very well respected throughout the world, with clients praising him for his “stellar assistance” advising their organisations.
Having studied both Physics and Chemistry at University, Richard is well placed to advise on technical subject matter across a wide spectrum. During his career, he has handled automotive applications, particularly in the electro-mechanical area of car dashboard displays, printer inks and the engineering of inkjet/laser printers, tooling and borehole monitoring applications in the mining industry, and heavy duty engineering in the defence and aerospace environments.
Richard handles a broad spectrum of subject matter in the mechanical and electrical engineering fields, including optics, software patents and internet-related issues. He has considerable experience in European Patent Office Oppositions and Appeal proceedings, including Hearings. He has also been involved in UK High Court and Patents County Court proceedings with solicitors and barristers.
Richard also specialises in designs and design copyright matters and understands the value of these often undervalued rights, having had considerable experience in successfully enforcing both registered and unregistered design rights.
Richard is a member of the Fédération International des Conseils en Propriété Industrielle (FICPI) and of the IPO Industrial Designs Committee, and is a regular Observer at the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA) meetings.
