Richard Newell

Richard is a Senior Associate with 15 years of experience at Carpmaels & Ransford, in particular, working in the life sciences and chemistry fields. He specialises in pharmaceuticals, whether the invention relates to a new chemical entity, a new therapeutic application, a new dosage regimen, a new formulation, or any other protectable aspect of a medical invention.

His practice includes regular work on EPO oppositions and appeals and he is a trusted advocate, having represented clients in a number of high-value cases at EPO hearings. Richard’s cases are regularly linked with litigation, and he gained first-hand experience as part of the Carpmaels & Ransford litigation team in proceedings before the UK High Court and the UK Court of Appeal in FibroGen v Akebia (UK Impact Case of the Year 2022). He has also directed successful litigation at the UKIPO and in Japan.

Richard’s awareness of post-grant issues feeds back into his work drafting and prosecuting applications through to grant, both at the EPO and worldwide. He handles a number of global portfolios of patent applications, working with attorneys worldwide to coordinate a central prosecution strategy.

Before joining Carpmaels, Richard studied chemistry at the University of Oxford, where he specialised in organic chemistry. His research in his final year was published for helping to establish a new protecting group in the carbohydrate field (the benzhydryl ether). Richard joined Carpmaels & Ransford 2008, and is a qualified European Patent Attorney, Chartered Patent Attorney (UK), and IP Litigator.

Outside of work, Richard enjoys skiing, hiking, and if confined to the indoors, playing music or chess.
