Sam Sackville

Senior Associate

Sam is part of the Pharmaceuticals team at Carpmaels. His work spans the full spectrum of pharmaceutical subject‑matter, including the preparation, prosecution, opposition, and defence of patents directed to new chemical entities, further medical uses, formulations, and polymorphs.

Sam has an extensive EPO opposition and appeal practice and is currently defending several patents protecting blockbuster pharmaceuticals in multi-party first‑instance and second‑instance proceedings. Sam relishes the intellectual challenge posed by these complex cases, in which the legal, technical, and commercial considerations must be taken together to achieve the right outcomes. Moreover, his deep understanding of the issues that crop up in these contentious proceedings feeds back into his work at the earlier stages of the patent life cycle: advising on due diligence and the value of IP; drafting new patent applications; prosecuting international patent families; and obtaining patent term extensions.

Sam graduated from the University of York in 2014, obtaining a first-class honours degree with distinction in Chemistry. He spent the final year of his degree at GlaxoSmithKline, gaining valuable industry insight and taking an active role in the lead optimisation of small molecule antagonists for the oral treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Sam is an enthusiastic musician who loves watching live music. He also enjoys a game of squash or tennis and can often be seen hacking his way around the golf courses of Buckinghamshire.
