As part of the Engineering and Tech teams at Carpmaels & Ransford, the main focus of Kirwin’s work involves the preparation and prosecution of UK and European patent applications across a breadth of technical fields, including: mobile telecommunications, artificial intelligence/machine learning, software applications, medical technology (e.g. surgical instruments and medical imaging techniques), semiconductor technology, automotive electronics, and aerospace engineering.

Kirwin entered the patent profession after completing her Physics degree at Imperial College London, subsequently qualifying as a European patent attorney and UK patent attorney respectively in 2015 and 2016. Prior to joining Carpmaels, Kirwin worked at two other leading UK IP firms, gaining considerable experience working with clients ranging from start-ups to large multinational corporations and universities. In particular, she has significant experience in working directly with inventors to identify patentable features of their research and drafting new patent applications, as well as in coordinating the management and assignment of complex international patent portfolios in a variety of technical areas. Her practice also extends to providing tailored advice on due diligence, validity opinions, and freedom to operate analyses.

Being fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, Kirwin maintains a keen interest on intellectual property practice and court decisions in Asia and has authored numerous articles on this topic. She has also contributed as a speaker at numerous IP-focussed conferences in China.

Outside of work, Kirwin enjoys video games and baking.
