Cleantech

Each member of our close-knit team brings a wealth of specialist knowledge in chemistry, engineering and biotechnology

The Cleantech environment is fast-paced and volatile. We understand that competitor activity, funding rounds and grant applications often dictate the pace of patent prosecution and we work closely with our clients to anticipate and react to such events to help achieve their commercial objectives.

We have in-depth knowledge of mechanisms for accelerated prosecution in jurisdictions around the world, including Cleantech-specific mechanisms such as the UK IPO’s Green Channel.  We are well placed, therefore, to assist you in rapidly obtaining the granted rights that investors demand of emerging companies. On the other side of the table, we are experienced in conducting due diligence on third party intellectual property rights in the context of an acquisition, providing investors with the confidence needed to move forward.

We appreciate that the innovation needed to deliver resource-efficient, sustainable environmental solutions relies on evolving and emerging technologies that can cut across the conventional boundaries of scientific disciplines.

Each member of our close-knit team brings his or her own specialist knowledge, enabling multi-disciplinary seamless service at the interfaces of chemistry, engineering and biotechnology.

As a leading European intellectual property firm, we consistently attract the brightest and best from top universities and from across the spectrum of science and engineering. This uniquely positions us to handle the diverse range of technologies within this exciting field. Allied with our ingenuity in patent drafting and capability in prosecution, we are ideally placed to help you generate and develop patent portfolios that can withstand rigorous examination and third-party challenges.

Our Cleantech team covers inventions in solar, wind and hydro energy; biocatalysts and biofuels; cryogenic energy storage; fuel cells; hybrid and electric propulsion systems; laundry systems; carbon sequestration and waste management. As well as representing large multi-nationals, we act for many smaller start-up companies, and clients include Areva Solar, Codexis, Highview Enterprises, Neptune Wave Power, DuPont Teijin Films and Xeros.

Taking a growing IP portfolio to the next level

Xeros Limited is an award-winning, UK-based innovator of an eco-friendly laundry system which uses polymer beads and up to 80% less water, with a corresponding reduction in energy requirements. Xeros started life as a University spin-out but, after flotation on the UK stock exchange in 2014 and with plans to expand into other areas, the company was becoming increasingly frustrated with the absence of patent coverage in the US, its largest market. Xeros moved its growing patent portfolio to Carpmaels shortly after flotation and, working closely with in-house counsel and scientists, we delivered Xeros’ first four granted US patents within twelve months, as well as a raft of key patents in other jurisdictions. Besides prosecution, we are immersed in patent drafting, freedom-to-operate, due diligence and trade mark work for this exciting client.

“Working with Carpmaels is like a breath of fresh air. Outstanding counsel.” Gordon Ellis, Xeros Global IP Director
