Laura Johnson

Senior Associate

Laura sits within the Tech team at Carpmaels & Ransford and specialises in software inventions, particularly fintech and digital healthcare. Laura handles AI inventions across a wide range of applications, from telecommunications to the life sciences.

Laura’s work focuses primarily on patent portfolio building, with a particular emphasis on drafting and prosecuting patents in the software space. She has extensive experience navigating the challenges of securing patents for complex software and AI inventions in Europe, employing innovative strategies to maximise chance of success. In addition to patent prosecution, Laura is heavily involved in portfolio management, helping clients assess and maintain the commercial relevance of their intellectual property.

Prior to becoming a patent attorney, Laura did a degree in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford, where she earned a University College exhibition for academic achievement. She subsequently moved to the University of Warwick for an industry sponsored PhD in Telecommunications. Her research focused on optical wireless communication systems for underwater environments.

Outside of her professional work, Laura remains a tech enthusiast with a keen interest in emerging technologies. She enjoys experimenting with home automation systems, staying up to date with the latest advancements in consumer tech, exploring innovations that bridge the gap between software and everyday life, and the odd video game when time permits.
