Natalia Wegner
Partner

Natalia is a partner in the Biotechnology group, advising leading life sciences companies on high-value therapeutics before the EPO, UPC and CJEU. With over 15 years’ experience in European patent practice, including training and qualification at Carpmaels & Ransford, she is trusted by global innovators including Novartis, Biogen, Astellas, CSL, UCB and Neurocrine, as well as pioneering US East Coast biotechs at clinical and pre-clinical stages.
Clients value Natalia’s rigorous analysis and strategic thinking, as well as her ability to combine deep technical expertise with persuasive legal reasoning. She and her team develop and execute integrated, product-level IP strategies across gene therapies, nucleic acid-based therapies, antibodies, and engineered therapeutic proteins.
Natalia acts for clients in EPO oppositions and appeals and in UPC litigation, including technically and legally complex, commercially critical cases, both defending clients’ patents and challenging third-party rights to secure freedom-to-operate. This contentious focus informs a proactive and closely aligned approach to drafting, prosecution and SPC strategy, anticipating litigation risk and commercial realities to ensure robust, long-term protection.
Natalia is recognised for her persuasive advocacy. Her written submissions often resolve proceedings before oral hearings, and she has successfully overturned negative preliminary opinions at oral proceedings in difficult cases. She has also leveraged EPO outcomes to influence parallel UPC and national proceedings, contributing to favourable resolutions for clients.
Natalia has advised on transformative therapies including KESIMPTA®, COSENTYX®, HEMGENIX®, LEQVIO® and SPINRAZA®, and has played a key role in high-profile SPC matters nationally and before the CJEU, including C-181/24, C-354/19 and C-443/17.
Natalia’s expertise has been recognised by leading independent directories, including IAM Patent 1000 and Managing IP, where she is listed as a Recommended Individual and a Notable Practitioner respectively.
Natalia leads high-performing teams with a shared commitment to exceptional client service and technical excellence, delivering clear, responsive advice and consistently strong results.
Natalia holds a PhD in Immunology from Imperial College London, an MRes with Distinction in Biochemical Research from Imperial College London, and a First-Class BSc in Biochemistry from the Technical University Munich. She is an alumna of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes and the DAAD, Germany’s most prestigious academic sponsors.
