Sam graduated from The University of York in 2014, obtaining a first class honours degree with distinction in Chemistry. He spent the final year of his degree at GlaxoSmithKline, working as part of the fibrosis research group. Sam’s project focussed on lead optimisation of small molecule antagonists for the oral treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He also took an active role in the development of the chemistry and pharmacology of the programme.
With Carpmaels & Ransford, Sam works on patent prosecution in the chemistry and pharmaceutical sectors, as well as assisting partners and senior associates with opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office. He adds value to these cases by providing technical advice, reviewing case law, searching for prior art, summarising key case information, and analysing opposed patents for weaknesses.
Sam is also involved in several due diligence projects in which he is assessing the validity of patent portfolios and carrying out full freedom to operate searches in order to provide opinions on the strength and commercial value of the client’s intellectual property.
Sam is an enthusiastic drummer, saxophonist and pianist, who loves watching live music. He also enjoys a competitive game of squash or a leisurely round of golf.
