Thomas Nichols

Technical Assistant

Thomas joined the Engineering and Tech teams at Carpmaels & Ransford in 2021 having graduated from the University of Manchester with a first class master’s degree in physics. During his studies, he specialised in condensed matter physics and photonics with modules on biomaterials, semiconductors and soft matter physics.

During his master’s project, Thomas helped develop a computer model to determine the spin response of carriers in a mesoscopic graphene channel to both electric and magnetic field stimuli. The model aims to help researchers categorise and test graphene spintronic devices with the eventual goal of creating graphene spin logic devices. This work showed promising similarity to theoretical predictions and is currently undergoing validation and further modification.

In his free time, Thomas loves travelling, having spent a year of his degree at University of California: Santa Barbara. He also enjoys playing basketball and competing in hackathons.
